Le Rocchette

The Rocchette beach is in the southern part of the promontory of Punta Ala, in the municipality of Grosseto. It’s one of the most famous beaches in the area, because of the beauty of its sea, and the presence of a castle on top of a rocky spur.

Halfway between Punta Ala and Castiglione della Pescaia, the beach of Rocchette is about 3 km long, and has a rocky area at the north end, and a sandy coastline on the other side.

The characteristics that have made this beach popular, are its geographical position in one of the most beautiful areas of Maremma, but above all – the clarity and cleanliness of this stretch of sea. It’s not by chance that Le Rocchette has been awarded since 2005 as the best sea in the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia, for the green and blue reflections of its waters.

What to see in Le Rocchette

At the Rocchette you go to appreciate the beach and the sea. In fact, here you can find both stretches of equipped beach, and areas of free beach. Those who prefer comfort can take the sunbed and umbrella in one of the many bathing establishments that also offer all the services that usually accompany these structures, from showers to changing rooms, to bar. Those who prefer to move freely, can bring with them the necessary to enjoy the beach, the sun, and the sea.

Everyone can find the space that best suits their preferences.

Behind the coastline there is a beautiful band of maritime pines and Mediterranean scrub, typical of the area. The land of the pine forest, however, has been given in concession to the camping, so the pine forest is accessible to the guests of the structures. There are, however, some passages that allow access to the pine forest towards the hinterland for those who wish to seek refreshment in the shade of the pines.

For those who are staying in these camping sites it’s very convenient to be able to access the beach of Rocchette a few steps from their pitch, but obviously it’s not appreciated by those who want to spend just a day at the beach in this resort.

The Fort of Rocchette

The northern boundary of the beach consists of a spur of rock, on which in the 12th  century a watchtower was built to protect from the invasions of the Saracens. Over time, the appearance of the tower has been modified until it became a real border fortification of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

The current building maintains the austere aspect of the military construction, and the crenelated walls and the ancient, severed tower are visible. It’s visible from the outside but cannot be visited as it’s private property, but its mass dominates the entire beach.

The panorama

In this stretch of coastline, on a clear day you can enjoy a panorama that stretches over most of the coast and the islands of the archipelago. From the Rocchette, to the south you can see Mount Argentario. Looking out to sea you can see as far as the Island of Giglio, and the Island of Montecristo.

The sea of Rocchette

The sea of Rocchette, with its transparency and its colours from the reflections of the sky and the pine forest, have made this place famous. If you have the chance to go there, you’ll discover that the sea is up to its reputation. You’ll discover that to find a sea like this you don’t have to go to distant places, or other continents.

The area of the promontory, with its reddish rocks loaded with ferrous metal, is particularly appreciated by those who love snorkelling. The crystal-clear water allows you to see the many fish present in this stretch of sea, and makes a swim here a fascinating experience.

Below the tip of the promontory, you can go into the inlets to spot the rarest species. Although it seems like an adventure reserved for experts, in reality the coastline does not present dangers, and anyone can venture into the coves hidden among the rocks.

Even those who move by boat stop in front of this coast to admire the seabed under the Fort.

The beach of Rocchette

Another characteristic for which the beach of the Rocchette is appreciated is the sand: not too big to be rough, not too fine to stick on the whole body and fly everywhere. Children find the perfect environment to play, and can bathe comfortably without danger because the water slopes gently.

In one area of the beach dogs are allowed. For this reason it’s called bau-bau beach, and is particularly appreciated by those who want to spend their vacations with their four-legged friends. Obviously, the respect of all bathers and other animals must be guaranteed, but in this area, dogs can also find a place to play.

The Municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia guarantees the maintenance of the beach during the winter season by carrying out material to counteract the erosion of the seabed. This way we’re sure to find every year the beach available to those who wish to spend their vacations here.

How to reach Le Rocchette

To get to Le Rocchette you take the Provincial Road where the access is indicated. Especially during the summer period, we recommend arriving early because the parking lots in the area are often crowded. In the various parking lots the cost of parking is 1.50 euros per hour, with a maximum cost of 10 euros per day. If you can’t find a place in the parking lots closest to the beach, you can leave your car in Serignano, at the entrance of the campsite. Even here, however, parking is on payment.

From the parking lot you can easily reach the beach through a path of about 350 meters that leads to a stretch of free beach.

Where Le Rocchette is located

Located in the southern part of the Punta Ala promontory, in the municipality of Grosseto, Le Rocchette beach is one of the most renowned beaches in the area. The beach's fame derives not only from the beauty of its sea, but also from the presence of a castle perched atop a rocky outcrop, sheer above the water, which adds to the beauty of the surroundings.
